Chatbots democratise access to expert knowledge

The argument

For most of human history, access to the considered explanation of a doctor, lawyer, accountant or tutor has been a privilege of those who could afford one. Chatbots have collapsed that cost, at least for the explanatory layer of expert work. A person without insurance can now describe symptoms in plain language and receive a structured first pass at what to consider before paying for a clinic visit. A small-business owner can draft a contract or interpret a lease clause without first hiring a lawyer to read it. A student stuck on a maths proof at midnight has, in Khan Academy's Khanmigo and in the free tier of ChatGPT, the equivalent of a patient tutor on demand. None of this replaces the licensed professional in cases where the cost of being wrong is severe. But the relevant comparison is not 'chatbot versus expert'; it is 'chatbot versus nothing', and nothing is what most of the world's population has access to most of the time. Bill Gates argued in his 2023 essay The Age of AI Has Begun that the most important consequence of large language models will be exactly this — lowering the floor of personalised tutoring and medical guidance for people who cannot afford the alternative. Even in wealthy countries, the convenience of an always-available explainer with no waiting room, no appointment and no bill alters the everyday economics of consulting an expert. That is a useful change.

They note that access to explanation is not the same as access to reliable judgement, that these systems hallucinate and reflect biased or outdated training data, and that 'democratising' flawed advice can widen rather than narrow the gap if the wealthy still consult real professionals while others rely on an unverified machine.
