Tablets cause digital eyestrain
Studies suggest that continued exposure to blue light over time could lead to damaged retinal cells. This can cause vision problems like age-related macular degeneration.
The argument
Replacing textbooks with tablets means replacing paper — a surface the human eye has read comfortably for centuries — with a backlit screen, and the eyes pay the price. Optometrists group the consequences under digital eye strain, or computer vision syndrome: dry, irritated eyes, blurred vision, headaches and difficulty refocusing, brought on by extended screen use. Two mechanisms do the damage. People blink dramatically less when staring at screens, drying the eye's surface; and the constant close-focus on a glowing display fatigues the muscles that converge and focus the eyes. Health bodies report that a majority of heavy screen users experience some of these symptoms — and an all-tablet school would make every pupil a heavy screen user by design. Children are the worst-placed population for this experiment. Their visual systems are still developing, they are less likely to notice or report symptoms, and they already accumulate hours of recreational screen time before any schoolwork begins. Stacking six or more hours of curricular reading on top converts the school day into an unbroken screen marathon. Researchers studying the worldwide rise in childhood short-sightedness consistently identify prolonged near work on screens, and the indoor time that accompanies it, among the suspected drivers. Evening tablet use adds a further cost: the bright light suppresses melatonin and disrupts the sleep children need to learn. Printed textbooks impose none of this. Paper reflects ambient light, provokes normal blinking and causes no spectral disruption to sleep. Classroom mitigations — screen breaks, the 20-20-20 rule — survive contact with real timetables poorly. A technology that makes children's eyes hurt as a precondition of reading their coursework, this argument runs, should not replace one that never did.
