Feeling the "presence" of a ghost is due to electromagnetic fields

The argument

This argument holds that one of the most commonly reported ghost experiences — the unmistakable feeling that an unseen presence is in the room — has a physical explanation: electromagnetic fields acting on the brain, no spirits required. The scientific trail is specific. Neuroscientific research, most famously the laboratory work of Michael Persinger, found that applying weak, patterned magnetic fields to the temporal lobes could induce in many subjects the eerie conviction of a sensed presence — the feeling of someone standing near, watching, sometimes accompanied by fear or a sense of the uncanny. The temporal lobes are intimately involved in the sense of self and its boundaries; perturb them, and the brain can generate a 'felt other' out of nothing. Investigators of reportedly haunted locations have repeatedly noted what this predicts: such places are often awash in anomalous electromagnetic fields, from aging and faulty wiring, electrical equipment, or even geomagnetic variation — precisely the environments where presence experiences cluster. Related work on low-frequency sound points the same way: infrasound near 19 hertz, produced by wind, machinery or organ pipes, has been linked to feelings of unease and reported apparitions. The explanatory contest is then straightforward. The presence-feeling is real as an experience — sincere witnesses are not lying — but its cause can be either a disembodied spirit, requiring a revolution in physics, or a documented neurological response to measurable fields, requiring nothing new at all. The second explanation accounts for the experience, predicts where it occurs, and can reproduce it in a laboratory. From this standpoint, the haunted feeling is the brain responding to its electromagnetic environment. Because feeling the 'presence' of a ghost is due to electromagnetic fields, this argument holds, ghosts are not real.

Premises

Counter-arguments

The laboratory result the argument rests on has not held up well. A Swedish replication attempt using the same apparatus under double-blind conditions found that participants reported sensed presences whether or not the field was switched on, and that suggestibility scores predicted the experiences better than the magnetic exposure did. The original work has been criticised on those grounds — unblinded administration and participants primed to expect something unusual — and the disagreement remains unresolved. A finding this contested cannot carry a general conclusion about the nature of hauntings. The field survey evidence is weaker still. Buildings that generate ghost stories are typically old, and old buildings have degraded wiring, unusual acoustics, draughts, temperature gradients and reputations that precede any visitor — so an association between anomalous fields and reported presences has several plausible readings, of which the argument selects one. The infrasound work is a small literature that has not been widely replicated. More importantly, the structure of the inference overreaches. Even a fully established explanation of one class of experience — the sensed presence — would leave the conclusion unproven, because the position is a universal negative about ghosts, and reported ghost phenomena also include apparitions, recorded voices, moved objects and shared sightings. Explaining one channel naturalistically removes a line of support for the rival position; it does not establish that nothing of the kind exists. The strongest version of the sceptical case does not need this study at all. It rests on the absence of any reproducible positive evidence after long investigation, and on the general adequacy of ordinary explanations — pareidolia, sleep paralysis, expectation, misattribution. Resting on one disputed experiment makes the position hostage to that experiment.
