The argument
Every armchair rescue plan for Jack runs into the same physical fact: the North Atlantic on the night the Titanic sank was at roughly minus two degrees Celsius, water so cold that it kills not in hours but in minutes. Immersion in water near freezing triggers cold shock within seconds — involuntary gasping, hyperventilation and a racing heart — followed almost immediately by the loss of fine motor control as blood withdraws from the limbs. Within about ten to fifteen minutes, hands become useless claws, muscles fail, and clear thinking dissolves into confusion. Survival beyond half an hour is exceptional. Jack spends that entire budget of time before any clever solution could begin. He is in the water during the sinking itself, swims Rose to the floating door, fights off a desperate rival for it, and helps her aboard — all of it while submerged to the neck in lethal cold. The popular alternatives — testing the door's buoyancy with both of them on it, diving beneath it to tie life jackets underneath, swimming to find debris for a second raft — are tasks requiring exactly the dexterity, strength and judgement that hypothermia strips away first. The famous television experiment that 'proved' the life-jacket trick was performed by rested presenters in controlled conditions, not by a man already minutes into fatal cold stress. By the time any solution could have been conceived, let alone executed, Jack was already dying. Putting Rose on the door and keeping still was not a failure of imagination; it was the only act left available to him. Jack had to die to save Rose.

If near-freezing water was killing Jack within minutes, then getting him mostly out of it — as Rose was — is precisely the intervention most likely to have saved him, and it required no fine motor skill, only both of them shifting their weight onto the floating debris. The film shows the door held Rose easily, and later tests suggested it could have supported both if they balanced their upper bodies on it or lashed their lifejackets beneath it. The simplest solution, sharing the raft, did not demand the dexterity hypothermia strips away. Jack's death reads as a narrative choice, not a physical necessity.
