Question
Why do women still change their names?
Position‹2 of 4›

Women see changing their surnames as a harmless tradition

On this view the explanation is simply that many women do not experience the practice as political at all, and take a shared family surname as a convenient and untroubling tradition rather than as a concession to anyone.

  1. Women who change their names describe a preference, not a concession
  2. A convention can outlive its original meaning and still do useful work
