The argument

A central argument that telepathy is not real is that every experiment claiming to demonstrate it has, on examination, turned out to be flawed — failing the standards of evidence that genuine scientific findings must meet. Over more than a century, parapsychologists have run studies purporting to show telepathic communication, but when these are scrutinised, critics argue, they consistently exhibit weaknesses that undermine their conclusions: inadequate controls that allow ordinary sensory cues or subtle communication to leak between participants, statistical errors and the selective reporting of favourable results, small samples, and a lack of proper blinding. The famous ganzfeld experiments, often cited as the best evidence for telepathy, have been criticised on exactly these grounds. The decisive test, on this argument, is replication.
