The argument

The case against telepathy begins with physics. For one mind to communicate with another without speech, signals or technology, information would have to travel between two brains through some physical medium. No known force or field can do this work. The brain's electrical activity does generate electromagnetic fields, but they are extraordinarily weak — measurable only by sensitive instruments placed against the scalp — and they dissipate within centimetres, following the inverse-square law that governs all radiated energy. A brain across a room, let alone across a city, could not detect them above background noise. No candidate mechanism survives scrutiny. Quantum entanglement is sometimes invoked by believers, but physicists are clear that entanglement cannot be used to transmit information, and the warm, wet environment of the brain destroys delicate quantum states almost instantly. Any genuinely telepathic signal would therefore require a force unknown to physics — one that has somehow escaped detection by instruments sensitive enough to measure gravitational waves from colliding black holes. Neuroscience compounds the problem. Thoughts are not discrete packets waiting to be transmitted; they are patterns of activity distributed across billions of neurons, and those patterns are idiosyncratic to each brain's unique wiring. Even if a signal could pass between two heads, there is no shared code by which a receiving brain could decode another's neural activity. Telepathy would require new physics and new biology at once. Claims of that magnitude demand extraordinary evidence, and more than a century of investigation has produced none that withstands controlled conditions.
