Argument

Electric car charging networks are complex

Although electric cars will be common in urban environments, it will be inconvenient to use them in rural areas, because they will lack a network of chargers.

The argument

Electric vehicles will likely play an increasingly important role in urban environments, and the reason has less to do with the cars than with what is already in the ground beneath them. Cities are places where large quantities of electricity are readily available, served by distribution networks built for dense and concentrated demand. A charging network in a city is an addition to capacity that already exists. Outside cities that condition does not hold. Installing charging stations outside of cities and in more rural environments is challenging, and would require major infrastructure changes. The difficulty is easiest to see in the obvious substitution. Converting gas stations to charging stations sounds like swapping one dispenser for another, but a fuel station is a storage-and-delivery business: what it sells arrives in advance and sits on site until it is needed. A charging station has no equivalent buffer, because the energy must arrive as it is used. That is why the conversion would require changes in how electricity is distributed. Suddenly, gas stations would require far more power than they previously did, at a level the lines serving them were never sized to carry. The same problem exists when considering installing charging stations in rural towns. A location would suddenly need more power, but there would be no infrastructure to accommodate that change in demand, and building it means upgrading the network that reaches the town rather than only the site at the end of it. That is work measured in years and in spending far beyond what a single charging point could justify, and it has to happen before any driver can rely on charging there. Because of the challenges with installing charging stations outside of cities, it is unlikely electric vehicles will play a major role outside of urban environments. The future is electric, but limited.
