We need to re-adapt to barefoot running

Barefoot running is effective, but only after the runner has adapted to it. Transitioning to barefoot running too quickly or without preparation may cause injury.

The argument

This argument holds that barefoot running works — but only for runners who properly re-adapt to it: a lifetime in cushioned shoes leaves the body unprepared for barefoot mechanics, and the transition itself, not barefoot running, is where the danger lies. The starting point is honest about both sides of the debate. The human foot may well be capable of running unshod, but a modern runner's foot has never been asked to. Decades inside supportive footwear leave the foot's intrinsic muscles weak, the arch accustomed to being propped, the Achilles tendon and calves shortened and adapted to elevated heels, and the skin of the sole soft. Barefoot running also demands a different technique — shorter strides, a forefoot or midfoot landing, higher cadence — that shod runners have never practised. A runner who simply removes their shoes and runs their usual mileage loads unprepared tissue with unfamiliar forces, and the predictable results are exactly the injuries reported in transition: calf and Achilles strains, and metatarsal stress fractures. Those injuries indict the abrupt switch, not the destination. Done properly, proponents argue, the picture changes. Re-adaptation means starting with very short distances, building gradually over months, learning the gait deliberately, choosing forgiving surfaces before hard ones, and letting muscle, tendon and skin strengthen at their own pace — treating barefoot running as a skill to be retrained, not a switch to be flipped. Under those specific conditions, the benefits barefoot advocates describe become available without the casualties. From this standpoint, the barefoot question is badly posed as better-or-worse; the honest answer is conditional. Because we need to re-adapt to barefoot running before it can work, this argument holds, barefoot running is beneficial under specific conditions.

That is a finding about careful transitions, not abrupt ones, and it suggests gradual adaptation reduces the problem rather than eliminating it — which is a weaker claim than the one being made. The argument is also thinner than it looks once its concessions are counted. It grants that modern feet are deconditioned, that the technique must be relearned, and that the reported injuries are real; what remains is the principle that a new activity should be built up slowly, which is true of every form of training and is not a finding about footwear at all.
