Carbon dioxide is only 0.1% percent of the atmosphere

The argument

A recurring argument among those who hold that climate change is natural and harmless starts from the sheer smallness of carbon dioxide's presence in the air. The atmosphere is overwhelmingly nitrogen and oxygen; carbon dioxide amounts to a fraction of one tenth of one per cent — a few molecules in every ten thousand. Proponents of this view find it implausible on its face that so scarce a trace gas could steer the climate of an entire planet, likening the claim to a pinch of seasoning transforming a swimming pool. If the supposed control knob of the climate is this tiny, they argue, the system must instead be governed by far larger forces: the sun, ocean cycles, clouds and water vapour, which is by far the most abundant greenhouse gas. The argument extends to humanity's share of that trace. Most carbon dioxide entering the atmosphere each year comes from natural sources — oceans, soils, vegetation — with human emissions adding only a small proportion on top. A minor human addition to a minor constituent, proponents conclude, cannot be the engine of catastrophe. They add that carbon dioxide is not a pollutant in any ordinary sense but the raw material of photosynthesis, pointing to satellite observations of a greening planet and to commercial growers who enrich greenhouse air with it deliberately. Mainstream climate science replies that potency, not abundance, is what matters, and that the gas's heat-trapping effect is measured physics. But for those advancing this argument, the arithmetic of the atmosphere itself suggests that warming attributed to so small a trace must be natural in origin and nothing to fear.

The mainstream scientific reply is that a gas's climatic effect depends on its physical properties, not its share of the air. Carbon dioxide is a potent absorber of infrared radiation, and trace concentrations of potent agents routinely govern systems — the ozone layer shields the planet at a few parts per million, and small doses of a toxin can be decisive. The rise from about 280 to over 420 parts per million is measurably human: the isotopic fingerprint of fossil carbon and the corresponding fall in atmospheric oxygen match combustion, not natural flux. The resulting energy imbalance is observed directly by satellites. That CO2 also feeds plants does nothing to cancel its heat-trapping physics.
