Emotions are caused by physiological reactions
The physiological response comes first, then the emotion follows.
The argument
Many different physiological responses, such as an increased heart rate, sweating, and trembling, are strongly associated with emotional experiences. As a result, many people have made the "common sense" assumption that their emotions cause these physical sensations. The James-Lange theory of emotion inverts the common sense understanding of emotion, arguing that physiological responses to stimuli occur first and cause the emotions, not the other way around. Psychologist William James and physiologist Carl Lange each independently developed this argument in the late 19th century, leading to this theory of emotion being known as the James-Lange theory. Since that time, some studies have shown a link between specific physiological responses and emotions, including an association between elevated adrenaline levels and fear.

Counter-arguments
The objections to James-Lange are the reason the rival theories in this question exist, and the argument does not meet them. Cannon's critique is the classic one: visceral changes are comparatively slow and diffuse, while emotional experience can be immediate; the same bodily state — racing heart, raised adrenaline, shallow breathing — accompanies fear, rage, exhilaration and hard exercise alike, so the physiological signal is too coarse to determine which emotion is felt; and emotional experience survives conditions in which visceral feedback is disrupted. If several distinct emotions share one bodily profile, that profile cannot be what makes them distinct. The evidence offered also fails to establish direction. An association between elevated adrenaline and fear is exactly what a theory holding that fear triggers adrenaline predicts, so the correlation is neutral between the two accounts and cannot decide the priority question the theory is about. The Schachter-Singer position listed as a sibling was built on this point: arousal supplies intensity, but the label — and hence which emotion is felt — comes from an appraisal of the situation, meaning physiology alone underdetermines the emotion. The Lazarus position adds the sequencing objection. Appraisal appears to precede both the bodily response and the felt emotion: the reason a sound in an empty house produces a racing heart is that it has already been judged threatening, which places cognition upstream of the physiology James-Lange puts first. The fairest reading is that the theory identified something real — bodily feedback shapes and amplifies emotional experience, which the facial feedback position also draws on — while overstating it into a claim of strict causal priority that the evidence assembled here does not support.
