The Kardashian rise is a symptom of this generation's obsession with wealth, and they make that worse. Whether or not they are feminist is at best secondary to that.

The argument

Kim Kardashian became a celebrity overnight with the release of her sex tape, and that started a decade-long saga of obsession with the Kardashian-Jenner family which still hasn’t seen its end. They have they have had such an influence on their viewers that some viewers, in the midst of the obsession with the looks and lifestyles of these sisters, stop at nothing to share any resemblance with them. While some use it as an opportunity to earn money as celebrity impersonators, others end up spending thousands of dollars on surgical procedures to look like the Kardashians. The idea that looks equals wealth is one that is gaining prominence; especially in a world where the number of Instagram followers you have decides your worth. In the last decade with the rise of social media, influencers have slowly and steadily turned it into a means of preying on their unsuspecting followers. So is it really surprising that the Kardashians, who were pretty much the first influencers, scaled up the ladder at the speed that they did? Besides, the very fact that they are still relevant and thriving in spite of their many hypocrisies coming to light is proof of the current generation’s increasing fixation on materialism.

But saying that they are a symbol of society’s obsession with wealth would be to a large extent generalizing that the entire society is materialistic, while that may not be the case. The Kardiashians' ardent followers in truth represent only a fraction of society who, because of their overwhelming attempts to seek the attention of the Kardashian-Jenners, appear everywhere. With the passage of time and the increasing awareness about feminism and its different facets, the true face of opportunistic families like the Kardashian-Jenners are being revealed to the people who are slowly waking up from their slumber to see them for what they are - hardcore capitalists.
