Solar tiles provide cost savings in the long run

The upfront cost of solar tiles is offset by the eventual energy cost reductions. Over time, the energy generated by these tiles can significantly reduce, if not completely cover, the household's electricity expenses, presenting a financially viable option in the long term.

The argument

Every other roofing material is a pure expense: it is installed, it slowly degrades, and it is replaced, having generated nothing but shelter. Solar tiles are the only roof that pays its owner back. From the day of installation, the roof produces electricity that would otherwise be bought from the grid, and it goes on producing it for decades. Over a service life of twenty-five years or more, the accumulated savings on energy bills offset a substantial share — and in sunny regions, potentially all — of the system's cost, something no slate, asphalt or metal roof can claim. The economics improve further when solar tiles are installed at the moment a roof needs replacing anyway. The homeowner who must already pay for a new roof can fold the cost of generation into a single project, avoiding the duplicated expense of buying a conventional roof now and a separate rack-mounted solar system later. Government incentives sharpen the case again: many countries offer tax credits, rebates or feed-in payments for building-integrated solar, and surplus electricity can often be sold back to the grid. Where electricity prices rise — as they have done across much of the world — the value of every self-generated kilowatt-hour rises with them, making the roof a hedge against energy inflation. Finally, the investment is recoverable. Studies of property markets consistently find that homes with solar generation command higher resale prices. A roof that cuts bills for decades, captures subsidies and adds value at sale is, on this argument, the best-value roofing material there is.
