Space flight is physically demanding

The argument
This argument holds that commercial space flight should be limited to the young and healthy because space flight is, by its nature, physically demanding — an environment of stresses that an ageing or unwell body is poorly equipped to withstand. The demands begin at launch. Passengers experience strong G-forces during ascent and again at re-entry, placing real strain on the heart and circulatory system; conditions such as cardiovascular disease, hypertension or general frailty raise the risk that this acceleration triggers a medical emergency. Once in space, the body must cope with microgravity, which redistributes fluids, stresses the cardiovascular system further, and induces disorientation and space-sickness even in trained astronauts. And all of this happens in a vehicle from which there is no quick route to a hospital: a passenger who suffers a heart attack or other crisis in flight cannot be treated as they could on the ground. The argument notes that this is precisely why professional space agencies screen astronauts so rigorously, selecting for fitness and screening out conditions that the flight environment could turn lethal. Commercial passengers will face the same physics as professionals; the prudent standard is therefore the same in kind — restrict participation to those whose age and health give them a reasonable margin of safety, rather than selling tickets to anyone who can pay regardless of whether their body can take the journey. From this standpoint, opening space flight to the elderly or unwell invites foreseeable medical disasters in an environment where rescue is impossible. The physiological account is broadly accurate but is applied to the wrong flight profile. Most commercial passenger flights to date have been suborbital: a few minutes of weightlessness and brief acceleration loads, closer in demand to an aerobatic sortie than to an orbital mission. The rigorous screening the argument cites is designed for professionals who spend months in microgravity, perform demanding work and may need to conduct an emergency spacewalk — a standard calibrated to mission performance, not to whether a passenger can tolerate a short ride. The record also runs against the conclusion. John Glenn flew aboard the Space Shuttle at seventy-seven, in a mission that deliberately studied the effects of spaceflight on an older body; William Shatner flew suborbitally at ninety. Neither flight produced the foreseeable disaster the argument predicts. The deeper flaw is the proxy. Age and health are being treated as interchangeable when the relevant variable is cardiovascular fitness, which age predicts only loosely. A blanket age rule is simultaneously over-inclusive — excluding older people who are fitter than the median applicant — and under-inclusive, admitting young passengers with undiagnosed conditions that the flight environment could expose. Operators already screen individually on medical criteria, which achieves the argument's stated safety aim without the categorical exclusion.
