The argument
Commercial marketing presents spaceflight as an experience; physics presents it as an ordeal. A passenger on even a brief suborbital hop is subjected to forces no terrestrial activity reproduces: multiples of their own body weight pressing on the chest during ascent and re-entry, violent vibration, abrupt transitions into weightlessness and back, and rapid pressure changes — all inside a vehicle riding controlled explosions to the edge of the atmosphere. For a fit person these stresses are demanding; for an older passenger or one with cardiovascular disease, respiratory conditions or fragile bones, they are genuinely hazardous. G-loading strains the heart and circulation, weightlessness redistributes fluids and disturbs the inner ear, and an emergency — a hard abort, a ballistic re-entry — would subject occupants to forces that healthy bodies barely tolerate. The machinery itself remains young and fallible. Spaceflight has killed roughly one in a hundred of the people who have attempted it, a fatality rate orders of magnitude beyond commercial aviation, and the commercial sector's own short history includes fatal accidents in testing. Unlike an airliner, a spacecraft in trouble cannot pull over, divert or be reached by rescuers in minutes. Whatever happens, the passengers' bodies must withstand it unassisted. That is why state space agencies have always screened astronauts ruthlessly for age, fitness and cardiovascular health — not as gatekeeping but as engineering: the human body is part of the vehicle's safety system. Commercial operators selling seats to anyone with the fare are quietly deleting that safety margin. Until the technology matures, this argument holds, the danger of spaceflight means tickets should go only to the young and healthy, whose bodies can absorb what the journey — and its failures — inflict.

The oft-cited one-in-a-hundred fatality figure comes from orbital spaceflight, not the far lower-energy suborbital hops at issue, and whatever residual vehicle risk exists is borne by every occupant regardless of health. The proportionate safeguard is per-passenger clearance matched to the specific flight profile, plus maturing hardware — not an age or health bar applied at the ticket counter.
