Joe Biden was implicated in corruption scandals relating to his son Hunter

Hunter Biden, Joe Biden’s son, used his father’s position for his own financial gain. Hunter joined the board of Burisma, a Ukrainian gas firm, at a salary reported to be up to $50,000 a month, where he arranged an introduction between Joe Biden and Vadym Pozharskyi, an adviser to Burisma.^[1] Whilst holding a board position is not problematic in itself, Hunter Biden had no obvious qualifications or experience relevant to the role, suggesting he was hired to leverage the then-Vice President’s political power.^[2] In 2016, Joe Biden called for the removal of Ukrainian prosecutor general Viktor Shokin, who was investigating Burisma and other companies for corruption, and put pressure on the Ukrainian President and Prime Minister to ensure this happened.^[1] This was at the same time that Biden was working on US-Ukraine policy as Vice President, and he specifically called for stronger anti-corruption measures.^[3] Hunter Biden is also rumoured to have received $3.5 million in ‘consultancy fees’ from Russian businesswoman Yelena Baturina, the wife of the former mayor of Moscow.^[4] It is also alleged that Hunter has profited from providing Chinese nationals with links to the Chinese government with introductions with Joe Biden. These cases show Hunter Biden profiting greatly from his father’s political influence, and Joe Biden in turn using that influence to support Hunter’s business interests.
