The Argument
Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows (Part 1) has it all. The film is full of amazing performances and suspense. It has action, important information, and character development.
Deathly Hallows (Part 1) has great action scenes. There are many escapes, such as from the wedding, Godric’s Hollow, the Ministry of Magic, and Bellatrix’s captivity. The best action scene is the battle in flight between the Death Eaters and the Order of the Phoenix as they move Harry to the Burrow.
This film also tells the audience a lot of important information. It expounds on the Horcruxes and introduces and explains the Deathly Hallows. The film manages to convey all this vital information without boring the audience with long exposition.
Finally, Deathly Hallows (Part 1) takes the time to show the character development of our main cast. The personal relationships ground the story by being something that the audience can relate to. Ron’s stress and frustration of being the friend of The Chosen One that doesn’t actually know what he is doing is relatable and seemed a long time coming.
This film also showed the character development of Dobby. When we first saw him, he self-harmed if he spoke ill of his masters. In this film, he takes Narcissa Malfoy’s wand and says one of the series best lines to Bellatrix “Dobby never meant to kill, Dobby only meant to maim or seriously injure”.[1]He died saving his friends and as a free elf.
Counter arguments
Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows did not need to be split into two parts. This resulted in the pacing in Part 1 not being right; there were spurts of action followed by periods where nothing happened. It felt like a film that's sole purpose was the set-up of Part 2.
