The argument
This argument holds that Jack genuinely had to die to save Rose because the floating door — in truth a piece of wooden panelling — could not support them both: under the weight of two people it would have sunk, putting both into the lethal water. The film itself shows the physics. When Jack first tries to climb onto the panel alongside Rose, it tips and submerges, dumping them back into the sea; only when he slips off and leaves Rose alone on it does it stabilise with her clear of the water. The point is buoyancy, not surface area. However roomy the panel looks — the detail that launched a thousand objections — what matters is the mass of water it displaces relative to the load it carries. A panel buoyant enough to keep one person above the waterline can still ride too low with two aboard, leaving both partially immersed in water cold enough to kill within minutes. Floating 'on' the door while soaked to the chest is not survival; in the North Atlantic that night, it is merely a slower way to die — and James Cameron has defended the scene on exactly these grounds. Given that constraint, Jack's choice was the saving act.
