Who is the best basketball player of all time?
Back to question

Jordan had the highest peak

No other player was as dominant as Jordan at his best. But are individual records and statistics enough to give him this status? According to different metrics used to assess the performance of players, Jordan seems to be one of the best players the NBA has ever seen.

The Argument

While many players have won awards and championships and set impressive records at different points in their careers, Jordan sits at or near the top of nearly every major indicator of peak individual performance, including major accolades and statistics. Jordan's offensive production was unmatched: he led the NBA in scoring a record 10 times, and holds the all time career records for scoring average in both the regular season and playoffs. Advanced statistics, which aggregate different metrics in order to produce an overall measure of player value, are just as favorable toward Jordan as his conventional box scores. Jordan earned Win Shares at the highest rate of any player ever, holds the all time highest Player Efficiency Rating, and has the highest calculated Value Over Replacement Player of any retired player. Jordan also achieved the highest ever Game Score, a statistic which evaluates a player's performance in a single game, in an overtime victory against the Cleveland Cavaliers on March 28, 1990. Unlike many offense-focused players, Jordan made just as much impact on the defensive end. He made the NBA's All-Defensive First Team a record nine times and won the Defensive Player of the Year award in 1988, which few other players from a guard position have done. The combination of offensive and defensive achievement, as well as team success, led to Jordan being repeatedly recognized with the NBA's highest individual honors. He won NBA's Most Valuable Player (MVP) award five times, only once less than the all time record, and the Finals MVP award a record six times.
