A low-carb diet is the best way to lose weight

Low-carb diets are ideal for people who don't have the time, money, or patience for expensive and complicated diet plans. They are simple, free, and effective.


We currently live in a world of sky-high obesity rates, so everyone is looking for the best way to lose weight. With so many diets to choose from, many people are at a loss about which one is best. There is a new fad diet constantly. The low-carb diet is informal, and so has no specific date of invention, but has been around for decades. It's too effective to fade away like a passing trend.

The Argument

Carbohydrates are a source of energy for our bodies. They’re found in foods like grains (i.e. bread, some cereal), starchy vegetables like potatoes, and fruits. Our body can survive on just carbohydrates, so our bodies use the carbohydrates we eat for energy before we start using fat. This means that eating carbohydrates slows down the rate at which your body can burn fat. By replacing carbohydrates with more protein and fat in your diet, you can ensure that your body is actually burning more fat even though you’re eating the same number of calories. Also, eating more protein and fat keeps you fuller longer, so you’ll be eating less calories overall on a low-carbohydrate diet[1]. This leads to even greater weight loss. After adjusting to a low-carb diet, the average person loses between 0.5-2.0 pounds per week[2]. This is a reasonable and sustainable rate at which to lose weight. Two more reasons low-carb diets are the best is that they’re flexible and don’t cost anything. You don’t have to purchase a meal plan or a membership to go low-carb. You just start eliminating carbohydrates from your diet, which simply involves making different choices at the grocery store. The foods you replace carbohydrates with are endless, so you won’t get bored of the same foods. No other diet is as simple to use or easy to maintain long-term.

Counter arguments

Eliminating carbohydrates is no guarantee that you’ll lose weight. By consuming so many more high-fat and protein-rich foods, you’ll likely end up consuming far more calories than you did previously. If this doesn’t lead to weight gain, it will at least stall any weight loss. Many diets give dieters a meal plan, rules, lists of foods to eat – some sort of structure. The low-carbohydrate diet entirely lacks that. Most people won’t know what foods to replace carbohydrate-laden foods with, and some won’t even know which foods to eliminate. People run the risk of nutritional deficiencies if they attempt a low-carbohydrate diet without proper planning. Lowering carbohydrates will probably only induce weight loss within the confines of a formal diet prepared by a commercial company or dietician.
