Society encourages men to dominate workplaces

From a very young age, society teaches men to pursue leading roles for dominancy and high reward, to outperform women in all fields of work, especially STEM-related.

The argument

At a university level, men make up 82% of students to pursue a computer science degree, whereas women only make up 17% of it. Proponents of this position argue that this inequality in technology education is not a starting point but an outcome, and that it is a consequence of "pinkification" for girls at a young age. Jobs, clothes, and toys are marketed towards a gender rather than interest, so children are sorted towards or away from technical activity long before any of them chooses a subject. In particular, society discourages women from working and working in technology fields. The mirror image explains the other side of the gap. The underrepresentation of women in tech-related jobs arises because men, at a very young age, are exposed to opportunities and teaching codes that support their journey towards not only technical fields but STEM more broadly. A boy handed the equipment and the encouragement early arrives at university with a head start that is easily mistaken for aptitude. The pattern does not stop at entry either: women are 45% more likely than men to leave a STEM-related job within a year, which suggests the pressures continue inside the workplace rather than ending at the point of hiring. Expectations about family reinforce all of this. In many cultures, women are expected to start a family and take care of their children, and the husbands are encouraged to be the breadwinners. Such societal pressures discourage women from pursuing STEM-related jobs, which require years of education — a commitment that has to be made at precisely the age when those expectations press hardest. More men occupy technical fields because society allows them to pursue their goals and succeed, for which they are rewarded with high salaries.

Society is not the reason men dominate workplaces. Rather, the innate intellectual and biological differences between men and women cause the two genders to occupy different spheres: home and the workplace. Men dominate senior positions and leadership roles in the technical field because men are more assertive and dominant. Women tend to be nurturing, communal, and cooperative, making them less suitable for leaderlike roles. Furthermore, according to research using the Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale, men's IQ is slightly higher than women's. It is not because of society that men outnumbered women in the technical field but because of the biological and intellectual differences between them. The workplace favors masculine nature, which is more intelligent, assertive, and dominant.

Rejecting the premises
