Covid has inevitably created a recessionary crisis and Governments will be under intense pressure to restore growth. But if its growth at all costs And/or simply reverting to the way it was it will be a lost opportunity to seek a more equitable model. A model that is also attuned to the larger existential issue of climate change. Any new post Covid martial plan should focus on a progressive model the redressés much of what is faulty and unsustainable. If not, this pandemic will be a forewarning of even more turbulent times to come.
Implement a Green New Deal
We need to tackle the biggest challenge facing humanity! The rethink allows us to address the climate crisis in a way that wouldn't have been possible before Covid-19.
A Green New Deal is needed to restart the American economy
A Green New Deal would be the exact jumpstart the American economy needs, and would guarantee its success for years to come.
A Green New Deal will further guarantee the safety of small island nations
By creating self-sustaining energy and relying less on imports, the islands could become much more self-sufficient. This would both protect the island during a future pandemic as well as aid the environment.
A Green New Deal will facilitate relations within the European Union (EU)
While the virus is far from over or annihilated in Europe, this sort of international cooperation expected from the EU may very well trickle into its announced efforts of their own Green New Deal.
A Green New Deal will benefit the lives of vulnerable people of color in the United States
In the era of COVID-19, America failed its communities of color, but by implementing a Green New Deal it can guarantee a better future for these citizens.
So much inequality is baked into our human experience... this must be fundamental to what we work on next.
Global poverty is one of the most prominent risk factors for the pervasive COVID-19; fighting poverty now will pave the way for a better future
Global poverty was a crisis well before COVID-19, but now the number of impoverished communities is rising due to the current pandemic. It is both a cause and a severe symptom of the virus. In order to prepare for another crisis and lend aid to the hundreds of millions of people who have recently been stripped of jobs and resources, the United Nations’ goal of eradicating poverty must become a priority.
Equal distribution of wealth prepares countries for the burdens of COVID-19 cases, and will level the playing field for the aftermath
The economic crisis due to the COVID-19 pandemic is comparable to the 2008 recession. In a world that already suffered from systemic inequality before the pandemic, the best way to recover is to actively redistribute wealth as a symbol of solidarity and as a buffer for those experiencing economic hardship. The only way to step out of this crisis and prevent future damage is to acknowledge that the world we are living in is currently unequal by nature.
Global solidarity creates a healthier world; only collective alliances rather than an individualistic mindset can beat COVID-19
Even before the COVID-19 disaster, the world was experiencing the effects of drastic social and financial inequity. If we want to overcome a global pandemic, a pooling of resources is necessary. If one disadvantaged nation is ravaged by COVID-19, the virus only spreads. To both prevent and prepare for further crises, we must unite under the concept that no one is truly free until all are free.
The dominant form of commerce is what got us here in many ways. We must reimagine this system to avoid externalities that cumulatively lead to catastrophic collapse.
Publicly owned healthcare could provide free healthcare to all
Implementing Universal Basic Income would ensure basic economic stability for all citizens
Universal Basic Income (UBI) is a great solution to increasing income inequality in an unregulated capitalistic society, but also in the face of increasing worker displacement due to AI and robotics
Increasing taxation on large corporations and the extremely wealthy will create a more financially balanced society
Trickle-down economics just does not work. By taxing the extremely wealthy and large corporations and reducing taxes on the middle class and the poor, more public services could be better funded and income inequality would decline
Some say that disrespect of nature is what led to the current pandemic. We must build a society that puts that balances the needs of nature with human wants and desires.
The COVID-19 pandemic is a stark reminder of our dysfunctional relationship with nature.
Many people are wondering when life will get back to normal after the COVID-19 crisis. We should be asking: Can we use this opportunity to learn from our mistakes and build something better? A focus on nature can help us understand where pandemics come from and how the socioeconomic fallout from the crisis could be mitigated.
Humans can use what they learned from COVID-19 to help climate change after the coronavirus pandemic.
Climate change and COVID-19 are two very different challenges, but they do have some key things in common. Both are global; they do not respect national boundaries, and both require countries to work together to find solutions. In order to have a better planet, humans should start helping with the issue of climate change after the pandemic of COVID-19.
