Can prevent and cure type 2 diabetes

Studies have shown that plant-based diets can effectively prevent and cure type 2 diabetes.

The argument

A powerful argument for the whole-foods, plant-based diet is its demonstrated effect on type 2 diabetes — a disease of disordered blood-sugar regulation that has reached epidemic proportions worldwide. Type 2 diabetes is driven largely by insulin resistance, often linked to excess body fat, particularly fat accumulated in and around the organs. Diets built on whole plant foods — vegetables, fruits, whole grains, legumes, nuts and seeds — are high in fibre and nutrient-dense while being low in the saturated fat and refined sugars associated with the condition, a profile that helps the body manage blood sugar and improve insulin sensitivity. Research on plant-based dietary patterns has consistently associated them with substantially lower rates of type 2 diabetes. The argument holds that the diet can not only prevent the disease but, strikingly, treat and even reverse it in many who already have it. Clinical programmes and studies built on whole-food, plant-based eating have reported significant improvements in blood-sugar control, reductions in insulin resistance, and weight loss, with numbers of patients able to reduce or, under medical supervision, eliminate their need for diabetes medication as their condition improves. By reducing the fat that drives insulin resistance and supplying high-fibre foods that blunt blood-sugar spikes, the diet addresses the underlying mechanism of the disease rather than merely managing its symptoms.
