Eating whole foods promotes good overall health

Whole foods are real foods: what grows in soil, what falls from trees, and what can be obtained from livestock. Real foods are far more nutritious than factory-made foods. More nutrition means less micronutrient deficiencies, which means better overall health.

The whole foods approach rests on a simple, well-supported idea: that eating foods in or close to their natural state, rather than heavily processed products, promotes better health across the board. Whole foods — vegetables, fruits, whole grains, legumes, nuts, and minimally processed animal products — deliver nutrients in the form and combination in which they naturally occur: fibre alongside carbohydrate, vitamins and minerals embedded in their food matrix, and none of the added sugar, refined starch, excess salt and industrial fats that processing introduces. Nutrition research has consistently linked dietary patterns built on whole, minimally processed foods to lower rates of heart disease, type 2 diabetes, obesity and several other chronic conditions.
