It is not difficult to eat whole foods your entire life. You can satisfy every one of your taste buds while giving your body all of the nutrients it needs. The more consistent you are with healthy eating, the better results you will see.
The argument
This argument holds that the whole foods diet is the ideal diet for humans because it is the easiest to maintain in the long run — and since a diet only works while it is followed, sustainability is the property that matters most. Most diets fail not because their rules are wrong but because their rules are unliveable. Regimes that ban entire food groups, demand calorie counting, or impose rigid meal plans run against appetite, habit and social life; adherence collapses within months, the weight and health gains reverse, and the dieter cycles to the next plan. The whole foods diet sidesteps this failure mode by being a principle rather than a prescription: eat foods in or near their natural state, and avoid heavily processed products. Sustainability is not a property of a diet alone; it is a relation between the diet and the eater's circumstances. The simple test is also not simple at the boundary. Bread, cheese, yoghurt, olive oil, pasta, tinned beans, cured meat and roasted coffee are all processed to some degree, and most are unobjectionable; a rule requiring a judgement about degree of processing at every purchase is a continuous small decision, not the frictionless heuristic described. The adherence evidence does not identify a winner either.
