Fully funding STEM degrees would encourage more young people to enter those fields
The argument
The argument for making STEM degrees free specifically holds that the price of higher education deters young people from entering science, technology, engineering and mathematics, and that removing the cost for these subjects would draw more of them in — to society's benefit. STEM degrees are demanding and often longer or more intensive than other courses, and the prospect of significant tuition debt can tip a hesitant student away from a challenging technical path towards a cheaper or seemingly safer option. By fully funding STEM degrees, the argument runs, the financial barrier and the fear of debt are removed for exactly the fields where a shortage of graduates does the most damage.
