STEM degrees are essential for their careers so the degree isn't 'optional'
The argument
This argument for free STEM degrees rests on a distinction about necessity: for careers in science, technology, engineering and medicine, the degree is not an optional enhancement but a strict and unavoidable requirement, and so charging for it functions as a toll on entry to entire professions. One cannot become a doctor, an engineer, a research scientist or many kinds of technologist without the relevant degree and the professional accreditation that depends on it; there is no alternative route. By contrast, some other fields can be entered through experience, apprenticeship or self-teaching. Where the qualification is genuinely mandatory, proponents argue, treating it as a discretionary purchase that students choose to pay for misrepresents its nature. The fairness point follows. If a degree is the only door into a profession, then its price determines who is allowed through that door, and charging high fees for STEM effectively rations access to medicine, engineering and science by ability to pay. Talented students from poorer backgrounds may be deterred from pursuing essential, society-serving careers not for lack of aptitude but because the compulsory qualification is too costly or carries too much debt risk. Since these are precisely the professions society most needs filled, pricing out capable entrants harms everyone. From this standpoint, because the STEM degree is a non-negotiable prerequisite rather than an optional good, the state should remove its cost so that entry to these essential careers is governed by ability rather than wealth. Treating a mandatory professional gateway as a free service recognises what it actually is. Because STEM degrees are essential for their careers and therefore not truly 'optional', this argument holds, university STEM degrees should be free.

Counter-arguments
Critics attack the essential/optional line the argument turns on. Plenty of non-STEM paths are just as gated by a mandatory degree — law, teaching, veterinary science, architecture, clinical psychology — so singling out 'STEM' as uniquely non-optional is arbitrary, and would have the state subsidise some compulsory qualifications while charging for others equally compulsory. They also note that in systems with deferred, income-contingent fees, tuition is not paid upfront and is repaid only above an earnings threshold, so it does not actually bar poorer students from entering a profession; the 'toll on entry' the argument describes largely does not operate as claimed. Finally, because STEM graduates tend to be among the higher earners, making their degrees free while charging others can be regressive — using general taxation to subsidise those best placed to repay. On this view the case for singling out STEM is weaker than it appears.
Rejecting the premises
