Running barefoot is how we have always run and is how our body has evolved to work
The argument
A foundational argument for barefoot running is evolutionary: humans ran barefoot for the entire span of our evolution before the very recent invention of modern cushioned shoes, and our bodies are therefore adapted to run that way. For hundreds of thousands of years, our ancestors walked, ran, hunted and travelled on bare feet or, much later, in thin, minimal footwear, and the human foot — a sophisticated structure of bones, muscles, tendons and arches — evolved precisely to absorb impact, store and return energy, and provide natural shock absorption during running. Modern thickly cushioned running shoes, by contrast, are an invention of only the last several decades, an eyeblink in evolutionary time. The argument holds that running as we evolved to run works with the body's natural design, while heavily cushioned shoes interfere with it. Barefoot runners tend to land on the forefoot or midfoot rather than striking heel-first, a gait that proponents argue is gentler and more in keeping with the foot's natural mechanics, allowing the arch and lower-leg muscles to do the shock-absorbing work they evolved for. Thick heel cushioning, they argue, encourages a heavy heel-strike that the body was never designed for and that may transmit greater impact up the leg, while also weakening the foot's own muscles by doing their job for them. The evolutionary premise is an appeal to nature that does not settle the health question. That humans evolved to run barefoot shows our anatomy is capable of it, not that it is better for us today — evolution optimised the foot for survival and reproduction on natural ground, not for pain-free running on concrete and asphalt over a modern lifespan, and 'what we evolved to do' is not automatically what minimises injury.
