The argument

The case against barefoot running is, at heart, a case about the weakness of the evidence offered for it. Advocates rest much of their argument on an evolutionary story — that humans ran without shoes for most of their history and are therefore built to do so — but an appeal to how ancestors lived is not a clinical demonstration that barefoot running improves modern outcomes.
