The theory that Jimmy Hoffa was buried beneath the Renaissance Center rests on testimony from people who claimed proximity to the events rather than on any physical evidence recovered from the site. Its principal source is Marvin Elkind, Hoffa's former personal driver, who said Hoffa was killed and buried under the building while it was under construction at the time of the disappearance. Proponents note the significance of the timing: an active construction site offers a place where ground is being disturbed as a matter of course, and where concrete poured on schedule would render anything below it permanently inaccessible. Elkind, who retained connections to organised crime after Hoffa's death, told the journalist Adrian Humphreys about an episode he treated as confirmation. Walking one day with the Mafia leader Anthony Giacalone, Elkind said Giacalone gestured toward the Renaissance Center and remarked, "say good morning to Jimmy Hoffa, boys". The exchange is offered as the kind of remark that would make sense only to someone who knew what the site contained, made by a figure positioned to know it. The account is said to be corroborated by a second witness. Michael Yarbrough, a now retired corrections officer, stated that he stumbled across Hoffa being murdered at the Renaissance Center construction site on the day Hoffa disappeared. Proponents treat the value of this as lying in its independence: two people with different relationships to the case, one connected to organised crime and one not, are said to place the killing at the same location on the same day. What the theory supports is the broader position that Hoffa was buried rather than disposed of in some way that left no site to identify, and it names a specific place where, on this account, the body has remained inaccessible ever since.

Although the Renaissance Center theory is plausible, many expert's do not agree with this theory. The main reason for their dissent is simply because other theories are more compelling. The only Mafia link to this theory is Marvin "the Weasel" Elkind who had no authority in the Mafia and therefore would not have been privy to information on Jimmy Hoffa. Other theories posited come from people with larger authority in the Mafia and therefore seem more reliable.

Rejecting the premises
