Why is Settlers of Catan so popular with millennials?
Back to question

Millennials are increasingly staying in

The death of nightlife culture, and the increasing number of young people choosing to stay in over partying, is driving this surge in board game popularity.

The Argument

According to a study, there has been an increase in millennials preferring to stay home more than the general American population. [1]Because millennials want to stay in more, there has been a shift toward people socializing from the comfort of their homes. This has led to the rise in the popularity of playing group board games for entertainment. Board games that require players to use strategy and effective communication have become popular.[2] Settlers of Catan is a board game categorized as a strategy game where collaboration between players is necessary to conquer and win. This is the perfect game for millennials to play for a night in for socializing with friends. Therefore, Settlers of Catan is a popular board game among millennials.

Counter arguments

Millennials are staying in more because they do not want to go out and socialize. Instead, they are staying in to have alone time to rest and self-care.[1] This means that millennials want time alone, not time for playing board games. Therefore, Settlers of Catan is not popular among millennials because they want to stay in more.

[P1] Millennials want to stay in more but still want to connect. [P2] Board games have become more popular due to their appeal of at home socializing. [P3] Therefore, Settlers of Catan is popular among millennials.
